Raising Awareness About Plastic-Free Travel in Machu Picchu
Responsible People, Tierras Vivas, Inca Trail Machu and other Inca Trail tour operators are working together to raise awareness among travelers visiting Machu Picchu and the local communities living around the citadel about reducing plastic use. We actively share this message with visitors upon arrival and hold meetings with residents of Hidroeléctrica to promote the protection of this sacred Inca site.
Responsible People encourages every traveler visiting Machu Picchu to join this “Plastic-Free Machu Picchu” initiative. It is essential to bring a reusable water bottle or canteen to reduce single-use plastic. While not everyone may see the importance at first, small actions can lead to meaningful change.
By becoming part of Responsible People, you help create a better world for future generations. Be responsible—care for our planet and protect the natural beauty surrounding the Inca citadel.
This initiative to reduce plastic use began in response to the growing number of plastic bottles found in the area and in nearby rivers, which has led to increasing environmental contamination. Many travelers and local residents are still unaware of the impact of plastic waste, as it often ends up in rivers and green areas surrounding Machu Picchu.
SERNANP works alongside Inca Trail tour operators and Responsible People to provide informational sessions about waste management for local communities. We encourage proper disposal of trash, especially in areas near train and bus stations, ensuring that waste is collected and processed in appropriate facilities. Through these efforts, we can help keep the trails, rivers, and breathtaking landscapes of Machu Picchu clean.
