Bringing Sustainable Agriculture to 3,800 Meters in the Andes

In the high-altitude communities of Patacancha and Rumira, where families live above 3,800 meters (12,500 feet), agriculture is a constant challenge. Freezing temperatures, frost, and unpredictable weather conditions limit food production and directly affect both nutrition and income.

At Responsible People, we are addressing this challenge through the construction of community greenhouses—simple yet powerful structures that create a controlled environment for growing crops throughout the year. Inside these greenhouses, families can cultivate strawberries, vegetables, and other nutritious products that would otherwise be impossible to grow at this altitude.

We have successfully built a pilot greenhouse that is already making a difference. It provides fresh food for daily consumption and creates new opportunities for families to generate income by selling their harvest.

Our Goal

Our next step is to expand this initiative by building more than 30 greenhouses for families in these communities. Each greenhouse is designed using locally available materials and adapted to the extreme Andean climate, ensuring durability, efficiency, and long-term impact.

Bringing Sustainable Agriculture to 3,800 Meters in the Andes

Key Benefits of the Project

  • Year-round food production, reducing dependence on seasonal crops
  • Improved nutrition with access to fresh and diverse foods
  • Additional income opportunities through the sale of surplus produce
  • Empowerment of families, especially women who often lead agricultural activities
  • Sustainable development, promoting resilience against climate change
  • How You Can Help

We invite individuals, travelers, and organizations to be part of this meaningful project:

  • Support us through donations to fund greenhouse construction
  • Join as a volunteer and contribute directly in the field
  • Share our mission and help us reach more people

Every greenhouse built represents a new opportunity, a stronger family, and a more resilient community.

Together, we can grow more than crops—we can grow hope, dignity, and a sustainable future in the Andes.
